Will Kaul retired in 2017 from Great River Energy as vice president and chief transmission officer after a 38-year career. He formed K2 Energy, LLC in 2018 and is continuing to promote grid expansion and the smooth transition of the energy system as a senior advisor.
Kaul was a founder and served as the leader of the $2 billion CapX2020 transmission initiative, a coalition of eleven upper Midwest utilities which planned and built 800 miles of regional transmission. He also was a founding member and past president of WIRES, a Washington D.C. – based trade association that advocates for proactive planning and investment in North America’s high-voltage, transmission infrastructure to support clean energy integration, grid resilience, and an electrified economy.
Kaul has served on numerous boards as a volunteer and as an independent director and is the immediate past chair of the Great Plains Institute. He is currently serving as a director on the board of the Energy Systems Integration Group. He formerly served as a director on the board of non-profit publisher Graywolf Press and as an Advisory Council member of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank.
